Origin of Fox Terrier
Learn about the origins of the Fox Terrier.
The Fox Terrier, also known as the Fox Terrier, is a breed of dog that originated in England around the 18th century - the period when horse-hunting was most popular. The Fox Terrier was born with the role of a "professional baiter" - notable for its small stature, agility, courage and ability to squeeze into narrow terrain.
Many sources suggest that the Fox Terrier is the result of crossbreeding between three breeds:
- English Foxhound: Scent and Speed
- Old English White Terrier: Hunting Ability
- Bull Terrier: Toughness
By the early 19th century, Fox Terriers were not only kept as fox hunting dogs but also as companion dogs in America, Europe and Asia. They were also a favorite pet of many celebrities, royalty and even appeared in movies.
Fox Terrier Classification
After many years of development, Fox Terriers were divided into two separate breeds based on coat type: Wire Fox Terrier and Smooth Fox Terrier.
Smooth Fox Terrier
The smooth fox terrier has a short, close-fitting coat.
Smooth Fox Terrier, also known as smooth-haired fox terrier, is the first Fox Terrier line officially recognized in 1885 by AKC (American Kennel Club), featuring a compact appearance, short, smooth, easy-to-care-for hair.
Physical characteristics:
- Height from 35 - 40 cm, weight from 6.5 - 9 kg
- Body: Compact, sporty
- Coat: Short, smooth, close to the body, no beard like the Wire Fox Terrier
- Coat color: Mainly white mixed with black, brown or tricolor
- Ears: V-shaped, always folded forward
- Tail: Naturally carried high, curved over the back.
Wire Fox Terrier
The Wire Fox Terrier dog with its characteristic curly coat.
Wire Fox Terrier, also known as the wire-haired fox terrier, is a very popular fox terrier breed in the US and Europe and has been successful in dog competitions. It was recognized by the AKC in 1912 - quite late compared to the Smooth Fox Terrier.
Physical characteristics of the hard-coated fox terrier:
- Size: Height 36 - 40 cm, weight 7 - 9 kg
- Body: Small, compact, well-proportioned, short back
- Coat: Double coat, curly, coarse, hard fiber, stain resistant
- Distinctive appearance: Has a long beard on the muzzle, looks very "old" and has a lot of shaggy hair on all four legs.
- Coat color: Mainly white with black, brown or large patches of color
- Ears: V-shaped, folded forward
- Tail: High, erect, may be docked in some European countries.
Fox Terrier Personality Traits
Fox terriers are very active and love to run and jump.
Although divided into two different types, Fox Terriers still have the same general personality: "intelligent - active - brave - loyal - curious". Specifically as follows:
Smart & highly independent
Fox Terriers are very intelligent, quick-witted and good learners. They can easily learn from basic to advanced training if properly trained.
Because they are intelligent, they can sometimes be a bit independent and "stubborn" and often think they are the leader in the house, so you need to be consistent and train this dog from a young age.
Brave - fearless
Fox Terriers were bred to be fox hunting dogs, so they are very brave, not even afraid of opponents larger than themselves, always ready to protect their owners and territory.
Hyperactive
Fox Terriers are very active dogs, they need to exercise every day to release energy and feel happier. If they are locked up for too long and do not get enough exercise, they will become stressed and develop destructive behaviors such as biting and destroying furniture or barking loudly,...
Curious & Exploratory
True to their terrier nature, Fox Terriers are very curious. They like to sniff, dig around the house and yard, and chase fast-moving small animals such as mice, cats, squirrels, birds, etc.
Because of this, when taking this dog out, you need to have a leash to easily control them.
Is Fox Terrier popular in Vietnam?
Although fox terriers are very popular in Europe and America, in Vietnam they are not well known and are even very rare.
Here are some reasons why Fox Terriers are not popular in Vietnam:
- The number of Fox Terriers in Vietnam is extremely rare, mainly imported from Europe to serve the needs of professional players, not as popular as regular pet dogs.
- High price: Because they are not commonly bred domestically, Fox Terriers must be imported directly from abroad, leading to a fairly high price ranging from 30 to over 70 million VND/dog, depending on origin, purity or appearance.
- Requires experienced owners: Fox Terriers are not ordinary pet dogs, they need regular exercise and interaction and are only suitable for people with experience raising terriers.
